Canberra goalkeeper Andrew Charter will begin his bid to become a two-time Olympian at the Oceania Cup in Rockhampton, which starts with a clash against New Zealand.
The Kookaburras are the No. 1 team in the world, but Charter says the only goal is chasing gold in Japan next year.
"Olympic qualification is what we strive for, to get our ticket to Tokyo is what we have been aiming for all year, so there is added pressure there," Charter said.
Charter, 32, was the back-up Australian goalkeeper for the London Olympics in 2012, but made the position his own in Rio three years ago and has played 175 internationals.
"That experience is essential and something that can't be overestimated," Charter said.
"We've had a lot of influx of new young talent. It's been good to have experienced guys mentor the younger ones to get them up to speed with how we play."
Charter will also play for the Canberra Chill in a reinvigorated second-tier format, which starts later this month.
"Charters is always great to have at the back," said Chill captain Dan Conroy.
"He always helps out some of the younger guys and brings out professionalism to the squad as well.
"It's good for the sport and helps the crowds [to games]."
