Falls are expected above 1000 metres in southern and western parts of the ACT on Monday night, with up to five centimetres predicted.
Meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology, Helen Kirkup, said the falls should begin in elevated parts of the ACT after sunset and continue into the early hours of Tuesday.
"For mountain areas like Thredbo and Perisher, the cold air will move through late afternoon and will move into the south of the ACT later tonight," Ms Kirkup said.
"We might see between two and five centimetres in the higher peaks, and people will wake up to snow on the Brindabellas."
The forecast for snow comes as a southerly change late on Monday will bring rain to Canberra.
The bureau predicts between 10 and 25 millimetres will fall later on Monday.
Ms Kikrup said the same weather system would move through southern parts of Australia up through the NSW coast.
"It will reach the Hunter later on, but it won't go through the northern parts of the state," she said.
"It will move through today and tonight before it eases off tomorrow."
Tuesday is expected to have only three millimetres of rain, before the forecast is expected to clear for the rest of the working week.
Maximum temperatures are expected to get as high as 24 degrees on Friday.
Ms Kikrup said the rain was set to return on Saturday.
"It will be fine until the weekend, when there'll be another front moving through," she said.
"There's going to be fairly cool southerly winds in general on Monday and a bit warmer on Tuesday and as the cloud cover breaks up a bit, it will warm up again on Thursday."
The bureau says Monday's weather is set to reach 22 degrees, before the maximum temperature drops to 12 on Tuesday.
