Greene steps out of the naughty corner and back into spotlight

Having done the crime and served his time, an unrepentant Greene is ready to re-assume the villain role in Saturday's grand final against Richmond at the MCG, where close to 100,000 fans will boo his every touch of the Sherrin.

"No different to the last couple of weeks, or last couple of years," he said. "It is what it is. I'm used to it now."

For eight seasons, Greater Western Sydney have scrapped and fought for every piece of media coverage they could get. On Monday, however, it was a chook-feeding frenzy the likes of which the Giants have never seen before.

Just about every outlet in the city was accounted for at their Olympic Park headquarters - not to mention the journos who flew in from interstate - as GWS made 20 of their players available for interviews and photos ahead of the biggest day of their lives.

Greene was the bloke everyone wanted to hear from, a week on from his controversial suspension for making contact to the eyes of Brisbane Lions star Lachie Neale - a charge he still vehemently denies, and a punishment that triggered a furious and unprecedented attack on the AFL's judicial system from the club's chief executive Dave Matthews.

For the 25-year-old forward, who watched the final moments of Saturday's thrilling preliminary final win over Collingwood alongside Matthews and Stephen Coniglio on the boundary of the MCG, it's all ancient history.

"I'd rather not be doing this, but it's all part of it," said Greene, addressing the assembled press pack with teammate Jeremy Cameron standing by his side as if he were part of his personal security detail.

"There's been a few stories along the last couple of weeks but it's all played out well, and we're in a grand final, so I'm happy."

Physically refreshed by his tribunal-mandated break, will Greene be curbing any of his trademark aggression against the Tigers? "I probably won't be going near anyone's face, but I'll be playing how I usually play."

Has coach Leon Cameron given him a dressing down for his actions? "Nah, not really. I don't think he will either. I think he'll just let it go. I'm just playing my role this week."

Did Greene apologise to his teammates for getting himself suspended? "Nope."

Greene had a good way of putting his own trials and tribulations into perspective. "I always compare it to EPL (English Premier League) players - I love my soccer. The scrutiny they face is 10 times this, so I always refer back to that," he said.

"I'd like to think I could fit into a Steven Gerrard mould, but he's retired now. I've always compared myself to him."

Greene and Cameron, once next-door neighbours in the Breakfast Point facility where GWS's draftees used to live, are among 11 players still at the club from their inaugural 2012 list. They lived through 12 defeats by 100 points or more across their first three seasons in the AFL, which makes where they stand now all the more significant.

Even back then, Greene was a cherub-faced demon, a comic-book bad guy in training. "I don't think he's changed too much at all, to be honest. He's always had that about him," said Cameron.

"He always plays on the edge - a lot like all of our players, and myself, I'm sort of the same. He's always making headlines and that sort of thing, but he's never changed the way he's played.

"He's always played with that attitude and to be honest, he just wants to win, each and every week, and he's always had that, even when we were getting beat early days."

Greene said the Giants were ready to prove to the AFL just how far they've come since then.

"We've been a reasonably good side for the last few years, we've played finals the last four years. Making a grand final sort of brings you to prominence, but we've always had that belief," he said.

"It's really starting to show now (to) the outside world. I've never played in (a grand final) so I'm just looking forward to it, running out with 21 of my best mates.

"It's an amazing opportunity, something I've wanted to do since I can remember."
