The ACT Emergency Services Agency said there were no active fires in Canberra as of 8.30pm Tuesday.
"We are experiencing extremely thick smoke sweeping into the ACT from the fires across the border this evening. As a result Triple Zero (000) is currently being inundated with call from the community," it said.
"Please only call Triple Zero (000) if you see an active fire (flames or an isolated column of smoke).
"Heavy smoke will continue to impact the ACT from fires across the border well into this evening and tomorrow. Along with current dust and strong winds, the air quality remains poor."
ACT Health urged Canberrans to "Plan ahead if you're going out tonight and for those more sensitive to smoke, consider a more low key celebration & stay indoors".
It recommended people avoid prolonged or heavy physical activity outside when there was smoke around.
People who are sensitive to smoke, especially those with pre-existing heart and lung conditions, should take extra care and stay indoors where possible and take medication prescribed by their doctor. People with asthma should follow their asthma action plan.
People who are sensitive to smoke and air pollution includes:
- people with heart or lung conditions (including asthma)
- children aged less than 14 years
- pregnant women, and
- people over 65 years of age.
"Anyone with concerns about their health should seek medical advice from their doctor. And anyone experiencing wheezing, chest tightness or difficulty breathing should seek urgent medical attention and in the event of a medical emergency call triple-zero (000)," ACT Health said.
