The ANU decided to shut down all non-essential activities, including sport, on campus due to the coronavirus pandemic, which meant all ANU Hockey training and playing was suspended until further notice.

It's forced ANU Hockey to withdraw all 17 of their teams across all grades from the opening rounds of the competition - potentially ending their 2020 campaign before it's begun.

Hockey was one of the few sports planning to go ahead with competitions as planned this winter, with rugby league, Australian football, rugby union and soccer all putting their seasons on hold.

Hockey Australia had left the decision in the hands of the respective state associations, with Hockey ACT announcing on Tuesday they planned to keep playing.

It's unclear whether that's still the case given Hockey ACT chief executive Rob Sheekey didn't return The Canberra Times' calls on Friday.

Their season is scheduled to start next Friday.

ANU Sport president David Luchetti also declined to return calls, while ANU Hockey declined to comment.

ANU Sport made the decision at the directive of the university, which wants to minimise any non-essential activities on campus to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

"All club operations will be cancelled or postponed and now extends to all club activities including and extending beyond the ANU campus facilities," ANU Sport said in a statement on their website.

"This decision has been made by ANU Sport with strong support from the university to mitigate the risk to our students and the ANU community being exposed to COVID-19.

"Please note all ANU Sport facilities are unavailable for hire."
