The Prince flew into Canberra from Sydney as a part of his Australian trip. The Prince was the third Royal visitor to Canberra for the year. The Duke of Edinburgh had visited in February and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester had been in April.
Prince Bertil would be met at Fairbairn RAAF base by the administrator of the Commonwealth, Colonel Sir Henry Abel Smith and Assistant Minister for External Affairs, Sen. Gorton.
In the afternoon, Prince Bertil would lay a wreath at the Australian War Memorial and visit Regatta Point. He would later be attending a reception hosted by the Ambassador for Sweden. Following this, he would dine at Government house for dinner.
The busy stopover would continue the next day with a visit to a property at Uriarra ahead of a luncheon given by Prime Minister Sir Robert Menzies.
After his visit to Canberra, the Prince would fly to Melbourne before returning to Sydney.
He had said he hoped to meet as many Australians as possible on his trip. The trip was also to boost trade between Australia and Sweden with the Prince saying Australia was seen as "a big farming country" by the majority of Swedes.
The Prince was at this time second in line to the Swedish Throne.
