It is hard to imagine the Phillip ice skating rink not being around, however, on this day in 1979, it was just a part of a plan for future enjoyment.

The Canberra Times reported on plans for the Olympic-sized rink to be built at the Phillip Swimming Pool Centre.
The rink would ensure the facilities could be used all year round and not just in warmer months as was then the case for the outdoor pools.
In the past, the centre had closed for five months of the year and now a continuous operation would provide additional employment for the centre staff.
The rink was expected to be ready for use by May 1980, ready for the school holidays, and there had been reassurance that use of the pool facilities would not be affected by construction of the rink during the summer months.
Also in the works was the development of a 10-pin bowling and rollerskating facility at Woden Town Centre.
