This mission remains unchanged, even as our world changes around us.
That's why we have launched The Canberra Times' new Facebook group, The Canberra Times Courts and Crime.
Our challenge and obligation in this increasingly digital world is deliver the news to readers in different and varied ways - and the ways you want.
This new group will allow us to deliver our courts and crime coverage through social media in one place, without some of the restrictions we face through our main Facebook page. It allows us to limit comments that would ordinarily prevent us sharing this type of news.
It will allow us to provide insights, updates and news as it happens across the ACT.
You'll still be able to find the most important court and crime news on our homepage, and see past articles in our dedicated crime index page.
Why should you join our new group?
Because there is no voice like a trusted voice. It's not gossip, it's not secondhand information.
We are in court every day and our coverage is led by court reporters Blake Foden and Cassandra Morgan and police reporter Peter Brewer, with support from our team of dedicated news journalists. They provide a level of coverage unmatched in Canberra.
We want to share information with you - and not just the headlines. The story behind the story.
We want to take you to places we go that maybe you can't or you just don't have the time.
And, when we can, we want to keep you updated - we follow through with what happened next.
We will also deliver it in the most timely fashion possible.
That might not mean instantly - because getting the right information is more important than getting the fastest information.
