But that didn't stop her from claiming some of the biggest "big dogs" in world cricket in her WNCL debut.
If Rebecca Carter didn't suffer a knee injury in the warm-up - and then the NSW Breakers hadn't been so sporting to allow her to play - then Sutcliffe would've been watching from the boundary of Phillip Oval.
But the Breakers showed the true champions they are and allowed her to make her debut - given the Meteors had already named their team when Carter's knee started to swell.
The Breakers cruised to a 78-run victory, but Sutcliffe shone with the ball - claiming 3-66 off her nine overs.
Not only that, she got the valuable wickets of Alyssa Healy (92 runs off 97 balls) and Ashleigh Gardner (62 off 40).
NSW finished with 5-337 off their 50 overs and the Meteors could only manage 8-259 in reply.
While a handful of teammates made starts, only Carly Leeson went on with it - finishing with an unbeaten 54 off 53 balls.
"The announcement came 15 minutes before we started to play," Sutcliffe said of her late call up.
"I was quite nervy when [Meteors coach Jono Dean] came up to me and said I was on.
"I thought today was just going to be a pretty cruisy day. I was pretty chilled this morning, but 15 minutes before the game I was a bit all over the place."
Not that it showed when the white ball was finally thrown to her.
Australian wicketkeeper Healy looked destined to bring up yet another century before Sutcliffe struck.
She also claimed the scalps of Gardner and Rachel Trenaman (70 off 92).
Sutcliffe said it would be a story she'll enjoy in the future.
"It's pretty cool to have her be my first WNCL wicket and I hope I can get some more big dogs in the future," the 18-year-old said.
"But that will definitely be a story in the future."
The Meteors travel to Perth where they play Western Australia at the WACA on March 12.
