1. Sophie Edwards
Singer-songwriter Sophie Edwards invites you to find out what she's been up to recently. In between Netflix binges and taking photos of her dog, the Canberra musician has taken on some fun projects this year including the launch of She's on the Bill - a regular femme-centric music event - as well as producing and cowriting with a bunch of other musicians. Hear about all of this, as well as some of Edwards' acoustic-driven songs this weekend. Saturday, 7.30pm. The Front. Tickets are $15.87 from Eventbrite.
2. Roller derby
It's spurs against fangs as the Brindabelters take on the Red Bellied Black Hearts in the Roller Derby. Both teams are on a winning streak after the Hearts defeated the Black 'n' Blue Belles in the season opener and the Brindabelters secured victory over defending champions the Surly Griffins in June's Pride Month bout. Saturday, 6pm, with the first whistle at 6.30pm. Southern Cross Stadium. Tickets from $17.38 from Moshtix. Free entry for kids under five.
3. Stronger Than Fiction
Documentary film festival Stronger Than Fiction presents some of the latest features from around the world presenting moving stories, relevant topics and cutting-edge cinematic craft. The latest film is System K, which showcases a group of street artists in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The political drive of the work is clear: Congo is one of the most resource-rich countries in the world, but its history has left many inhabitants in desperate poverty. Friday, 6.45pm. Dendy Cinemas. Tickets from $20 from dendy.com.au. Continues on August 15.
4. Nothing Else Matters
Calling all Metallica fans. This weekend the Canberra Theatre Centre sees a symphonic tribute to the heavy metal band. As Metallica's live albums S&M and S&M2 have shown, the fusion of symphony and metal can give a new perspective on the band's classics. Friday, 7.30pm. Canberra Theatre Centre. Tickets from $99 from canberratheatrecentre.com.au.
