More than 60,000 COVID-19 vaccine appointments will be moved from the Garran surge centre which will be replaced by the arena in the Bruce.

People who were booked in at the Garran site after September 3 were sent a text on Friday afternoon to alert them their appointment would be moved.

The bookings will be shifted to the same time and date at the new location.

"This move to the AIS means more Canberrans will be able to access a Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination faster," Chief Minister Andrew Barr said.

The arena will open for vaccinations from September 3 and have capacity for up to 24,000 doses each week.

"The ACT government's single biggest priority over the next three months will be to vaccinate as many Canberrans as possible," Mr Barr said.

"Our target is not 80 per cent of the eligible population being vaccinated. We are aiming for much more than that."

The ACT leads the nation with 40 per cent of people aged 16 and above fully vaccinated and 63 per cent covered with one dose.

The opening of the vaccine hub has been based on surety of Pfizer supply from the federal government in the months ahead.

Shifting vaccination away from the Garran surge centre will free the space up for its original purpose as an overflow emergency department for COVID-19 patients.

Mr Barr said the government would work with local doctors and pharmacists to provide vaccines to all cohorts, including children aged 12 to 15 who are now eligible for Pfizer.

The Pfizer vaccine is also available at the Canberra Airport precinct hub and several GPs.

Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said those with a booking at Garran from September 3 would be automatically transferred to the new AIS clinic at the same time.

"If the change in location affects your ability to attend at your current appointment time, you will be able to change your appointment from Sunday morning, either online through the MyDHR portal or by phone on 02 5124 7700," she said.

"Please do not call ACT Health to change an appointment before Sunday as they are working hard to move existing appointments and won't be able to process your request."

The Access and Sensory clinic at Garran, designed as a space for people with disabilities to more easily get the jab, will remain at that site for now.

Ms Stephen-Smith said work was underway to transfer it to Bruce.

Some appointments on September 3 will need to be rescheduled to facilitate the move.

ACT Health will contact those affected to reschedule and be given the option of a sooner appointment where possible.

Online vaccine bookings will be unavailable from 8pm Friday until 8am Saturday due to the move.

Ms Stephen-Smith has previously said safety concerns, particularly around lighting at the venue, would be addressed before the site was opened.

The AIS arena was closed in June last year, a decision underpinned by high fire risks, a report found.

"This is a very different use of that space, it doesn't require lighting around the arena that would be required for a big sporting event," Ms Stephen-Smith said.

"Of course, you don't have the crowds all in one place at one time, you have people moving through the venue in much smaller numbers than you would for a big event."
