The federal Liberal Party dropped a legal battle to force the Liberal Democrats to change their name earlier this year after senior Liberal figures argued it confused voters at the polls.

Liberal Democrat David Leyonhjelm drew first place in 45 columns on the NSW Senate paper at the 2013 federal election, prompting claims some mistakenly voted for him rather than the Liberals given the size of the paper.

Liberal Democrat director and candidate for Murrumbidgee Roman Gowor said the Canberra Liberals should change their name to reflect their "ideological platform".

"We suggest 'Conservative Party' would be a more apt reflection of the social conservatism that bedevils the party," he said.

"We're very keen to make it clear to the public that we are not the so-called Liberal party. We're the proper small-l liberals."

The Liberal Democrats will field 17 candidates at the ACT election, which is two more then the Greens, but shy of the maximum 25.

Canberra Liberals campaign director Daniel Clode said he was not concerned by the Liberal Democrats as the party failed to get 2 per cent of the vote at the 2013 election.

"The ACT ballot paper only has eight to nine columns," he said. "This is very different to the enormous ballot papers that saw the election of the Liberal Democrats to a NSW Senate position."

"The ACT has a small ballot paper and the Canberra Liberals are easily spotted in every electorate. We are on the left hand side of the ballot paper in four electorates and in the middle in Kurrajong."

Mr Gowor said his party was best known by Senator Leyonhjelm, even though many members "occasionally disagreed with his approach".

"We would stress however that Senator Leyonhjelm is only one, albeit highly respected, voice in the party and that the ACT Branch of the Liberal Democrats is functionally separate," he said.

"Senator Leyonhjelm's work in the parliament is invaluable in providing a voice for freedom-minded people throughout Australia, even if they don't agree entirely on every issue."
