The city has responded in spades - ladles? - and pledged almost $35,000 to Canberra's soup kitchen lady Stasia Dabrowski to buy her a new van.
The old one, which also had a dodgy gearbox, was written off in a minor accident last week, with 91-year-old Stasia behind the wheel.
A GoFundMe crowd-funding campaign was launched this week and the results were spectacular.
By Friday morning, $34, 630 had been pledged to buy a new van for the soup kitchen.
The campaign has stopped accepting donations now that the goal has been reached. And Stasia and her grandson Joshua Kenworthy, who helps her with the soup kitchen, are forever grateful.
"Over the moon," Joshua said.
"Just thank you to everyone."
Eileen Lawrence started the campaign and was blown away by the response of Canberrans.
"I am very pleased with the outcome and can't believe how all of Canberra has come together for such an amazing cause," she said.
"I'm still very shocked that over $30,000 has been donated in three days. It is truly amazing."
Joshua has been using his 2001 Holden Astra to collect and ferry food to keep the soup kitchen and other services such as bread collection going.
That included three trips between Weston Creek and Civic on Friday morning to set up the soup kitchen in Garema Place by 11am.
Joshua said there was still a chance a van would be donated.
If that did happen, all the money pledged would be used to keep the soup kitchen going and towards updating equipment.
Joshua has also promised his grandmother will not be behind the wheel of the new vehicle.
