Fast, yes. Furious? Maybe.

The Prodigy may be middle-aged and have shown little interest in evolving beyond the big beat rave formula that made them massive in the ’90s, but they know what their audience wants.

Liam Howlett and co arrived and launched straight into Breathe, the 1997 hit that turned them into a global phenomenon. Vocalist and dancer Keith Flint was part Joker, part court jester as he snarled across the stage, setting the bar high for the hour and a quarter of deafening beats and blinding strobe lights to come.

It continued as it began, which is no surprise for a band that’s barely tinkered with the formula in recent decades.

Occasionally, it was better: Omen from 2009 rock-influenced Invaders Must Die was a nightmarish thriller, Timebomb Zone in the encore is a massive explosion of block rocking beats (albeit 20 years too late).

Occasionally, it wasn’t: last year’s Champion of London was a misfire, at least on this night, while the attempt to break the speed limit during Run With the Wolves resulted in sounds crashing over each other. Voodoo People had the good fortune to be sandwiched between them, making it seem better than usual.

Flint was at his most demonic for Firestarter, where smoke effects and lighting combined to make it seem he was standing in an inferno and inviting us to light one. Elsewhere he seemed a little cartoonish, as the shock value and anger of years gone by has dissipated in favour of more hedonistic energies.

But there’s always one song that remains a problem, and they closed with it. Smack My Bitch Up has become something of a cult favourite, but whether it’s actually meant to be degrading to women or the band is simply so cynical that they designed it to spark controversy, it belongs to another era.
