Masses of bargain-hungry Canberrans will descend on the capital's major shopping centres this Boxing Day, cashing in on post-Christmas sales and pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into the local economy.

Department stores across the city will open earlier and for longer on December 26, which remains well-entrenched among Australia's busiest trading days despite the growing popularity of online shopping.
The Australian Retailers Association predicts retail trade in the ACT will reach $334 million between Boxing Day and January 15, up 3.4 per cent from last year's post-Christmas period.
David Jones will open their Civic and Woden stores from 7am to 8pm on December 26, and are predicting shoppers will snap up bargains on business shirts and men's suits, bed linen, lingerie and cookware.
The department store's general manager for menswear and kids, Chris Wilson, said more than a million shoppers were expected to pass through David Jones stores across the country on Boxing Day, its busiest trading day of the year.
“We expect to sell 150,000 Lego sets, 600,000 pieces of intimate apparel and hosiery, over 45,000 gadgets and small appliances and much more this David Jones Clearance," Mr Wilson said.
The clearance sale starts online at 9am on Christmas Eve.
