Motorcyclist in 'serious' condition after multi-vehicle pile-up on Bruce Highway

A motorcyclist has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after he came off his bike in a multi-vehicle pile-up heading southbound on the Bruce Highway near the Pine River Bridge at Bald Hills.

The Australian Traffic Network is reporting at least one car may have crossed the motorway into oncoming traffic, leaving one person trapped in a car.

It is understood up to four cars were caught up in the accident.

Two southbound lanes were closed off leaving just one open, and tailbacks were stretching 12 kilometres from the accident site back to Burpengarry as vehicles move slowly past the crash scene.

The pile-up has also caused delays on the Gympie Road arterial as drivers attempt to avoid the area.

Police are advising motorists to take alternative routes if possible, and are diverting traffic off the motorway at Anzac Avenue.

Police confirmed about 6:30pm that the highway had reopened but long delays were still expected.
