Organiser 16-year-old Bella Beiraghi, who is still at high school, said the girls’ Facebook event had “exploded” since they published it and has 11,000 people “interested” in the event.

The girls were driven to take action, she says, after a spate of high-profile attacks on women, including the attack that ended in the alleged rape and murder of Melbourne comedian Eurydice Dixon.

“Me and my girlfriends were having an online chat and we were discussing the recent tragic deaths and how we felt walking alone at night,” Ms Beiraghi said.

“We were all feeling quite fearful and at a loss of what to do. We’ve all felt scared to walk alone at night. We wanted to do something about it.

“So, one of us said, maybe we should create a walk just for our friends and family, thinking it would be a nice thing to do with our mums.”

The walk kicks off outside Parliament House at 5.20pm before heading down to the Botanic Gardens, across the Goodwill Bridge and finishing up at South Bank’s Wheel of Brisbane.

Ms Beiraghi said the teens have been overwhelmed and completely surprised by the response they’ve had.

“On the first day, over 800 people were on the page, and it’s just been growing ever since,” she said.

“We’ve also been supported by both genders. My 18-year-old brother and some of his friends are among them. They’re 100 per cent supportive of us, they’ve been amazing.

“I think it’s really brilliant because some men also experience fear when they’re out at night. But I think that it’s a bit less than what females feel.

“This walk will hopefully demonstrate that despite our differences, everyone should feel safe when alone no matter the time of day or night.

“We hope a mass demonstration of sentiment will translate into positive change.”

Greens councillor for the Gabba Jonathan Sri worked behind the scenes to help the girls notify the police and the council, and lend them a PA system and hi-vis vests to ensure they could run a safe event.

“I think it’s great that young people are organising these actions, but it’s a sad reflection on our society that women still don’t feel safe in our city,” he said.

“Toxic masculinity is still widespread in Australia, and we need to use a range of tactics to challenge this cultural problem.

“The best way to put an end to sexual assault and harassment is for people to stop assaulting and harassing others.

“We also need the state government to significantly increase funding for domestic violence shelters and crisis support.

“Statistically speaking, women are most likely to be abused by people they already know.”
