Belconnen households can now register for a green waste bin. Collections in the region will begin on September 3.

The green bins, which are used to collect garden waste, have been a success in the southern suburbs of Canberra with 48 per cent of Weston Creek and Tuggeranong residents opting-in to receive the service.

Belconnen residents can opt-in for a one-off $50 payment to receive the service, with eligible concession card holders exempt from payment.

Ginninderra MLA Tara Cheyne said to the end of June, more than 3100 tonnes of green waste had been collected for processing and less than one per cent of contamination had been recorded.

The waste is processed into compost products for landscaping and reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Following the Belconnen roll-out of the bins, the inner north and inner south areas of Canberra can expect green bin registrations next, followed by Gungahlin.

The remainder of Canberra will be offered the service by June, 2019.

Ms Cheyne said kerbside collections, garden waste processing and community education would be provided by JJ Richards and Sons, with SULO MGB Australia contracted to manage customer registrations as well as manufacture, deliver and maintain the green waste bins.

'The contract for the service to be delivered to the whole of Canberra by JJ Richards and Sons was signed for $36.8 million. The contract price is dependent on whether 75 per cent of the Canberra population sign up for the service.

The contract was signed in late June 2018 and expires in October 2023.
