Two weeks ago, the spinny space tree vanished from out the front of Canberra airport. If you're not active in the art world and don't understand my technical jargon, the spinny space tree is the kinetic sculpture Journeys by Kiwi artist Phil Price.

The sculpture, which stood at 10 metres, was a welcome sight for many a Canberran returning home, as well as those new to our fair capital. And in a city infamous for public art installations such as the Belconnen owl, we're bound to notice when we're down one of the good sculptures.
The absence of Journeys has rippled throughout the community, with many taking to the airport's Facebook page to voice their concerns and their wishes for the airport to sell a "mini souvenir version".
They've even received a call from a distressed woman who said the sculpture "was the best thing in Canberra".
"We love that Phil Price’s Journeys is inspiring such a great conversation. It has become a piece of art that belongs to the Canberra community, not just the airport," Canberra airport managing director Stephen Byron said.
"And that’s what public art is all about. It inspires people to start conversations, share their opinions, and it create a sense of ownership that we are proud to be a part of."
So where has the sculpture gone?
It's now resting easy in an airport hangar, undergoing a bit of a refurb.
The harsh Canberra "sun, rain and wind" have meant the sculpture was in dire need of a fresh coat of paint and upkeep from a carbon-fibre specialist, and it will be back on display in November.
But I'm not buying it.
After the sale of South Australia's Big Lobster made international headlines, it's not too big a leap to assume that perhaps a similar sculpture has found a new home at the Canberra airport. Think about it.
In 2016, Canberra airport had its first regular international flights. This year, the airport continues to expand their flight network overseas.
And guess what Australians are famous for? BIG things. Huge.
The Merino, the Banana, the Prawn, the Pineapple. Everyone from The New York Times to The Guardian has made light of our adorable yet bizarre affinity for massive monuments.
So what better way to welcome international visitors to our airport than with a big boy of our own.
Look forward to the return of the Journeys sculpture, ready yourself to welcome it home with open hearts and arms by all means, but don't you come crying to me if a 17-metre lobster takes its place.
