The Bureau of Meteorology said temperatures dipped down to an icy minus 6.3 degrees at 7.26am at Canberra Airport on Wednesday.

It's going to be chilly for a while, with a low of 0 degrees next Tuesday forecast to be the next day on which the capital won't see a drop below freezing point.

Bureau duty forecaster Rob Taggart said a high-pressure ridge was sitting over Canberra, bringing clear skies and light winds.

Mr Taggart said that, combined with the fact it was still close to the winter solstice, provided the recipe for the coldest morning of 2018 so far.

"It's also looking fairly certain that there'll be a cold front moving through Canberra on Monday night [and] Tuesday morning next week," he said.

The bureau's forecast for the next week shows predicted lows of minus 2 on Thursday, minus 3 on Friday, Saturday and Monday, and minus 4 on Sunday.

The top temperature during that stretch is expected to be 13 degrees on Friday and Saturday.

Thursday is the most likely day to bring rain, with a 50 per cent chance of showers in the early morning.
