Tim the Yowie Man is hanging up his much-loved Akubra hat.

But don't worry, it's just the hat retiring, not him.

His original hat had obviously been through the wringer, battered and torn.

"It's actually held together by gaffer tape and staples," Tim said, with a laugh.

The Akubra has been with him for 23 years, his constant companion as it travelled the world with him.

"It went to every corner of the globe," Tim said. "From the frozen Arctic Circle to ancient pyramids in Samoa."

And like any loyal friend, the hat was difficult to discard.

"I was given a new one for Christmas two - or was it three? - years ago but couldn't bring myself to swap," Tim said.

"But now I get 10 to 15 emails a day from people seeing my hat in photos or on Youtube and demanding I get a new one."

Tim has posted his latest "minisode" on Youtube, a fireside chat by him reminiscing about his time with the Akubra and finally deciding to give his good mate a rest.

The clip is also a very entertaining snapshot of TTYM's remarkable career over nearly 25 years as the world's first cryptonaturalist, the term he invented himself for someone who explores "rare, strange and hidden phenomena, predominantly from the natural world".

How could we forget that Tim the Yowie Man outwitted CBS executives and enraged famed executive producer Mark Burnett by actually finding the "top-secret" location for Survivor: The Australian Outback - actually south-west of Cairns - in 2000?

Tim not only found the campsite, he hired a helicopter and tossed out chocolates to the starving competitors, becoming an overnight sensation.

"My unauthorised food drop made international news that night," he said, on the clip.

Tim followed that up by being arrested in the United States for illegally towing a blow-up crocodile down the semi-frozen Missouri River in Kansas City. He was taking Survivor to task for hyping up the risk to its contestants, saying its crocodile footage was shot a long way from the base camp - like Cape York long way away. He was let off by police with a caution.

Then there was his hunt for the ever-elusive yowie - he reckoned he sighted one in the Snowy Mountains in 1994.

And his years of adventures that extended from bunyips to cursed shipwrecks to the Tasmanian Tiger; searches for the Mongolian death worm to dips in Loch Ness in the hope of glimpsing the monster.

"The last quarter of a century has been a rollicking journey of discovery," he said.

Indeed it has. And here's to many more adventures shared by Tim the Yowie Man and his new hat.
