Built in 1915, the Powerhouse was the first permanent public building in Canberra. It first closed in 1929, powering up again a couple of times over the following years, permanently closing in 1957.
In 2007, the Canberra Glassworks moved in, and in 10 years has become world class, attracting artists from around the globe who come to use the state of the art facilities.
And just as glass is fluid, watching the artists in the hot shop, blow and twist and turn exquisite pieces, so too is the Glassworks.
And to ensure there is expansion, the Glassworks has launched a Glass Future Fund, bringing the art and business world together.
Acting chair of the Glassworks Michael Snare says there is a growing body of evidence that thoughtful investment in the arts can deliver many economic benefits.
"The arts boosts tourism and jobs, which in turn increases property values and money flowing into government coffers," Mr Snare said.
"The arts also bring people together, stimulates community pride and fosters an inspiring and innovative sense of place."
The Glassworks is looking to improve on the visitor experience, with enhancements to the foyer and showcases, improvements in retail spaces, a refreshed website and audio visual displays throughout the building.
Business already on board include RPS Project Management, Tall Foundation, King & Wood Mallesons and Actewagl.
Gary Maxwell, of RPS Project Management, said there was just as much opportunity for businesses to gain from the collaboration.
"Artists have to think a little more laterally about solving problems," Mr Maxwell said.
"We're in the project management game so we're always trying to think of new and innovative ways to approach a problem, whether it's a project management problem, a design problem or something like that.
"For somebody like me who might not think the same way as an artist, engaging another side of your brain is a good thing."
Artist Jacqueline Knight, whose glorious chandelier made of neon and birdcages hangs in the foyer, says both worlds can learn a lot from each other.
"Artists are interesting because they have a practical side as well as a creative side," she says.
"To be successful you need both, you have to think left and right brain at the same time. I think business could benefit from our thinking."
