New music director Ashley Feraude, who took over the reins from Michael Liu, said he was looking to raise the bar on the musical statement at Canberra's fashion festival, which will take over new premises at the National Convention Centre, from May 13 to 16.

Feraude said the music would be unique each night of the festival, and the Canberra-based DJ and music producer will himself be performing on the final night under his moniker Magnifik.

"We are extending the music out to be a greater component of the performances," he said.

"There will be live performances before the show begins.

"When the show starts, there will be musicians performing a tailored piece of music and then we will bring back the first artists for a bit of a finale, to give the audience another treat."

Feruade said he was keen to witness the audience's reaction to the exclusive musical collaborations he has facilitated.

As well as uniting different genres in each set, Feraude revealed he had asked a saxophonist and a rap artist to collaborate with a DJ, for new and different sounds.

"We're pushing things that are a little bit different," he said.

"We don't want to be the music in the background.

"We want the audience to watch the fashion show and take note of the music at the same time."

Feraude said he chose seasoned musicians to illustrate the wealth of talent in the national capital.

"This is just proving how much Canberra has got going for it," he said.

"The music will complement the visual feast that you get out of the designs."

Each night of the fashion showcase is set to abide by a different theme – activist, inventor, cartographer, engineer – which will be reflected in the fashion, the music and the atmosphere created by lighting displays and short films.
