And while it won't be official (the $12,000 World Record Academy fee proved to be a bar) the group of four students and one childcare worker are determined to show what three years and 10,200 cans of Victoria Bitter can build.

Australian National University arts and science student Peter Whatman, 21, said the collection started after the friends agreed that everyone should break a world record once in their life.

''We've been collecting for this thing for 2.5 to three years, so it's pretty much been the five of us drinking the majority of it.

''Occasionally we have a house party and provide a couple of cases for people who want to help out, but we've drunk 90 per cent of it,'' Mr Whatman said.

The group have been drinking more than is recommended by Australian guidelines - each consuming about 2800 standard drinks over 1095 days.

But so far, the young men say, they feel fine.

''We're feeling OK. After a while some of us felt we had put on a bit of pudginess, but I guess we're all pretty young, active and healthy - so not too much damage but we could be healthier.''

The house will be built at Thoroughbred Park and the project will begin on November 9.

The group wants to raise $1000 and have picked Shake It Up Foundation Australia, which is helping to find a cure for Parkinson's disease, as its charity.

''Parkinson's affects some members of the group's friends and family so we wanted to get behind this charity,'' Mr Whatman said.

But they've spent a lot more cash just on the beer.

''We try not to think about it, but we have calculated around $15,000 all together.''

And after drinking about 83 cases of VB each the taste has grown on them: ''Originally we chose it because it was cheap and we liked the colour green but we have all grown into it and we all quite enjoy it. I don't think we'll be switching even after the challenge is complete.''
