The Opposition's Justice spokeswoman Vicki Dunne launched a bid in the Legislative Assembly today to access a full set of statistics on bail breaches, with her party claiming that the bail system was a "revolving door" for criminals.
Mrs Dunne said the motion was sparked by Thursday's fatal incident on Yamba Drive outside The Canberra Hospital that left one health worker dead and another seriously injured, with the man alleged to have been driving the stolen car that hit the two women out on bail.
The Liberals' frontbencher said she was worried that the territory's judges and magistrates were not being diligent in their application of the Bail Act.
"The impetus for this concern from the Canberra Liberals is the incident last week and I will not be reflecting on that incident itself," Mrs Dunne said.
"The person involved was well known to police, prosecutors and the courts and there had been about half a dozen incidents where the young man had been brought before the courts for breaches of bail and bail was opposed by prosecutors."
Mrs Dunne's motion was heavily amended by Attorney-General Simon Corbell and the ACT Greens in a move she dubbed a "disgrace."
She was also prevented from airing details in the Assembly of the criminal history of Justin Monfries, the man accused of driving the car that hit the two health workers.
