A super moon occurs about every 14 months, when the moon is both full and closest to the Earth in its elliptical pattern.

The super moon was expected to appear 14 per cent larger than any other moon in 2012.
The moon will officially reach its closest point to Earth about 1.30pm today, so those who missed viewing it last night will have another chance to see it at its best tonight.
