It's the fifth addition to the government's walk-in scheme, which the Australian Medical Association criticises for its cost to ACT taxpayers.

Belconnen walk-in centre nurse practitioner Wendy Kroon said a walk-in centre in Dickson would be very important with the new high-rises and local public housing.

"There's also not as many GP practices in the centre of Canberra," Ms Kroon said.

The centres were first opened in Woden - which has since closed - and are staffed by nurses to treat non-urgent injuries or illnesses.

New data has also revealed between New Year's Day and May 28 this year, common colds were the number one reason Canberrans visited walk-in centres.

Wound dressing and musculoskeletal issues were two and three in the top 10, which mainly consisted of flu-like symptoms, sprains or gastro symptoms.

The medical association's ACT president Dr Antonio Di Dio said walk-in centres cost ACT taxpayers $190 a visit.

This was compared with the $37.60 bulk-billing cost to the Commonwealth if patients presented to a GP.

"Our concern from day one has been that the walk-in centres do not represent good value for money," Dr Di Dio said.

He said about 50 per cent of walk-in centre users were referred to a GP anyway, making the scheme an inefficient use of taxpayer money.

Dr Di Dio said the government and the opposition had to be congratulated on the efforts they were making to make health care affordable in the capital.

"They are incredibly well meaning people who really want to make this work," he said.

But he said the government should continue to explore bulk-billing incentives.

"We also encourage them to look at work force issues at general practices," he said.

The new Dickson walk-in centre will be located in the Dickson Community Health Centre, which the government said kept it close to the light rail.

Three walk-in centres currently operate in Belconnen, Tuggeranong and Gungahlin. A fourth is under construction in Weston Creek.
