Commerford and Edwina Bone have traded the international Pro League for the Lyneham Hockey Centre in a return to club hockey this week.
Bone is set to suit up for the University of Canberra while Commerford returned for Tuggeranong in a venue far removed from their Pro League silver medal with the Hockeyroos.
"It's definitely a change," Commerford said.
"I'm just looking forward to playing a game of hockey purely for enjoyment without any of the stress of selection of high-level hockey.
"It's good to play with some familiar faces and to give back to the club."
Australia has risen to No. 2 in the world but Commerford concedes there is still plenty to work on in their pursuit of an Olympic gold medal.
MORE CANBERRA SPORT
A looming tour of Japan in August looms as a huge boost in the Hockeyroos' bid to do so as they look to right the wrongs of a quarter-final exit at the Rio 2016 Games.
"We've been heading over there every year for the past three years to prepare us for the Olympics," Commerford said.
"This one is in Tokyo, so we'll get a little bit of a taste of the weather over there, because this Olympics is set to be the hottest Olympics on record.
"Then we have the Olympic qualifiers in September, so hopefully we just win that and go straight through."
Then comes Hockey One, the revamped national boasting city-based teams and rule changes in hockey's answer to cricket's Twenty20 Big Bash League.
Hockey One will be played over a six-week home and away season with three home games per club with all matches streamed and finals televised.
Canberra will open their season against the Brisbane Blaze at the Lyneham Hockey Centre on September 29.
"Hockey at the moment is really trying to focus on getting more exposure, both on the sport and individual players," Commerford said.
"It just helps create a bit more of a buzz around the sport, and that will continue to grow."
