That's why the former NRL prodigy is adamant criticism of the maligned third-tier rugby competition is unwarranted as a group of ACT Brumbies hopefuls push their case for selection.

Wright shifted to outside centre for the season-opener last week and impressed in the Vikings' 25-point demolition of the Melbourne Rising.

He will likely also spend time on the wings and even at fullback during the season as the Brumbies try to find the best position for the attacking strikeweapon.

The NRC has been bashed by critics over the years, particularly because of the lack of connection with newly formed teams.

But the real benefit of the competition is watching players like Wright, who joined the Brumbies this year after a stint at Manly in the NRL, grow into their role and press their claims as future Wallabies.

Vikings back-rower Rob Valetini was plucked from the NRC earlier this week to join the Wallabies for a Test against Samoa and several fringe World Cup players will return to Canberra duties next week.

"I've heard the bad raps [about the NRC] but I don't think they're warranted," Wright said.

"A lot of guys are using it as a stepping stone to the fringe of the World Cup squad, so for now this is the next step to the highest level in Australia.

"The better we can make the competition and the more guys playing every week, the better it's going to be.

"This is a good opportunity for me to get a good number of minutes each week and try my hand at a number of positions. That's exciting, hopefully I can showcase what I can do in different positions."

The Vikings will play Queensland Country in their next clash on Sunday afternoon and they're confident they can fire again.

The Vikings' back line fired in the opening game of the competition, scoring six tries in an attacking shootout against Melbourne.

Noah Lolesio got the first opportunity to impress at flyhalf as the Brumbies search for someone to fill the giant hole left by Christian Lealiifano.

But Bayley Kuenzle is lurking and is also expected to get a chance to show his skills in the coming weeks.

"BK is an awesome player as well. What I want and what the team needs could be two different things and that's OK," Lolesio said.

"I didn't start a game [in the NRC] last year. I'm just looking to play some good footy and see how I go."
