Presumably we will all have 20/20 vision next year? That being so I hope we can look forward to a lot of great photography to enjoy with our clarity of vision.
As a reviewer, I would very much like every photography exhibition in each Canberra and Queanbeyan gallery, large and small, to be innovative, exciting, stimulating. In other words, I hope to see displays of great work that we will all enjoy viewing. And I would like to be advised in advance of exhibitions that I might review.
The catalogues for each exhibition in 2020 will have excellent essays in them, written by knowledgeable people and in styles that make them good for reading; enjoyable and informative companions to the imagery on view.
All exhibitions will be curated by people who know how to display the works to the best advantage so that the viewers will gain maximum appreciation of the full display, because the individual images are shown in the best collective way.
I'd be over the moon if we had more galleries with passing foot traffic enticed to see the exhibits, rather than them being in places where people have to make a clear decision to go and see whatever is on at particular times.
We have some excellent galleries displaying photography in Canberra and Queanbeyan but most of them are not located near shops or other places where potential visitors will routinely go. Maybe we could have some pop-up exhibitions in temporarily empty shop spaces where passers-by would see them. The Muswellbrook Camera Club managed that in an empty space this year, displaying prints and projected images facing out of the windows to be seen. Are there any real estate people interested in a novel way to draw attention to vacant premises they are marketing?
It would be wonderful if people would flood into photography exhibitions, enjoy the works on display, chat with knowledgeable staff and exhibitors, go away delighted - and even purchase works.
The Canberra Photographic Society turns 75 during 2020 and is planning to celebrate the milestone. Its regular exhibitions have been getting better each year, so I'm hoping to see something extra special for this anniversary.
Wouldn't it be great to see some individual Canberra photographers having big successes in 2020? Various locals have made their names in photography over the years, in local, national and international arenas. Two locals were finalists in the 2019 Australian Conceptual Photography Prize - Judy Parker with Shadow Play and Lunita Quraishi with Artist Selfie - and both will be exhibiting in Canberra next year. Let's hope a local wins that or another major photography prize.
One thing I expect will happen is that the finalists and winners of the Australia New Zealand (ANZ) Photobook Awards will be exhibited again at PhotoAccess. I hope the associated workshops, cancelled due to illness, will take place. Incidentally, if you have a book to enter, you can do so until January 15, 2020.
Personally, I'm planning to continue exhibiting in various group photography shows during 2020. I'm also hoping I'll produce some photo books of my own as a follow-up to my 2019 personal project, which was to keep a visual diary of every day this year.
