It was Sydney's first pink race day, held in support of the McGrath Foundation, which raises money to put breast care nurses in communities across Australia. But it was also a kind of last hurrah, at least in the short-term, as the coronavirus shuts down other racing functions around the nation.
Sally, an Indonesian teacher at Garran Primary, wore a vintage dress that she found on Facebook Marketplace in Canberra ("I think I paid $30 for it") and a gorgeous pink pillbox hat with bow by Canberra milliner Christine Waring.
"My shoes were Nine West which I've had for about eight years, the bag was Top Shop which I got from The Iconic and I paid $3 for the earrings from Decjuba," she said.
Her outfit - and innate fashion sense - scored her a finalist position in the competition.
It was the opening day of the Golden Slipper Carnival, which also featured a pink fashion lunch, with chef Colin Fassnidge at the helm
"We kind of knew it would be the last one for a while to we all had a really good time catching up," she said, of the event.
THE TOILET PAPER HERO OF DOWNER
In these uncertain times, we need a hero. And that person is the Toilet Paper Hero of Downer.
While others are stockpiling their rolls and unable to spare a square, our thanks to Vicki Althaus who alerted us to a community-minded person in Downer who was leaving rolls outside their house with a sign asking for people in need to take one.
"While we are being constantly confronted with depressing updates of the coronavirus and appalling scenes of selfish behaviour in supermarkets it is heartening to see wonderful gestures of generosity like this," Vicki said.
