Young's been working on controlling his aggression ahead of his return from an eight-week suspension for eye gouging when the Green Machine runs out against the Sea Eagles at Campbelltown Stadium on Sunday.

The 22-year-old was named on the Raiders' bench, with Canberra coach Ricky Stuart looking to either inject him into the middle or the second row.

It was Young's second suspension for eye-gouging in 2019, having also been hit with a five-game ban in round 12.

He's been working on his fitness during his enforced break, determined to come back in the best possible physical condition.

That's seen him return to the Raiders 17 as soon as he was available.

But he's also been working to ensure he's not hit with a third charge for the offence.

That's seen him team up closely with White, drawing on all the experience of the prop who played in four grand finals for the Melbourne Storm before moving to Canberra.

"Whitey when he was playing he was a bit of a rough head. I've been into him about what sort of stuff he did," Young said ahead of the season.

"Being in the Melbourne system it's probably the smartest system down there so he's given me a few good tips and just different stuff to be able to control my aggression and discipline, and just stay in the blue head. So it's been good."

Young's determined to change the perception of him amongst NRL fans, saying the word grub wasn't one he wanted next to his name.

He's still adamant he was unaware he made contact with New Zealand winger Adam Pompey's eye - with Pompey even testifying there wasn't any contact with his eye at the tribunal hearing.

But Young was still found guilty of dangerous contact.

It's the same charge he made an early guilty plea for against Canterbury prop Aiden Tolman earlier in the 2019 season.

"The first one was being unaware where your hand is. But as a first-grader and NRL player you need to know that sort of stuff," Young said in reflection.

"And the second time I can still swear now I didn't know that I made contact with the eye, but the review panel looked at it differently and everyone else. That's just the way it goes."

Stuart said he was unsure how he would use Young yet, having opted to bring him into the 17 and drop winger Bailey Simonsson and prop Dunamis Lui to an extended bench.

It could be in the middle, or it could be on an edge - with both Joe Tapine and Elliott Whitehead able to shift into the middle as well.

Stuart said he would look to build the young forward's minutes over the next month having last played NRL more than nine months ago.

"He is a very enthusiastic and highly energised young guy," the Raiders coach said.

"The one thing I have asked him is when he gets on, he doesn't need to do it all in the first two sets of six.

"It's a matter of balancing his energy and effort and his contribution. The easy decision for me to put him back in immediately is what he has done here over his time off.

"He is a really good young man. His professional attitude and dedication towards his training, standards around the boys, have just been impeccable.

"It's a credit to him because he has left nothing in the tank."
