Reverend Paul Black, the rector of the church, said COVID-19 restrictions had forced the services outside on to the lawns, possibly for the first time the church had been built in 1841 and consecrated in 1845.

"Certainly, we've always had services inside the church," he said.

Community carols will be held on the lawns from 5pm to 6pm on Christmas Eve on Thursday.

People are encouraged to bring a picnic and blankets to the Christmas Eve carols and share the joy of Christmas together.

The Christmas Eve service then starts at 7pm.

Being outside meant the congregation could actually sing the carols.

"At the moment, indoors, there's no singing when people come to worship," Reverend Black said.

On Friday, Christmas Day, there will also be a service outside on the lawns at 9am.

The St John's Care community lunch on Christmas Day will also be takeaway this year as well, with attendees giving boxed meals.
