Cricket Australia's head of the Big Bash Alistair Dobson said Canberra made an "extraordinary contribution" to the success of the Big Bash this year.
Manuka Oval hosted its final match on Thursday night - a rain-affected victory for the Perth Scorchers, which catapulted them into the Big Bash final against the Sydney Sixers.
More than 50,000 fans attended the 13 matches in Canberra, some of which were scheduled with just a few days notice.
The ACT government is keen to sign an extended deal for cricket content at Manuka Oval, but the coronavirus pandemic delayed negotiations.
The government's willingness to accommodate Big Bash fixtures at late notice despite COVID-19 concerns could bode well in future discussions for domestic and international matches in the capital.
"The Big Bash League wishes to thank the people of Canberra for their extraordinary contribution to the success of the season," Dobson said.
"The commitment of everyone in Canberra, led by the ACT government, especially Venues Canberra and ACT Health, and Cricket ACT, ensured that 13 of the 60 matches played to date could be delivered safely and successfully at Manuka Oval.
MORE CANBERRA SPORT
"Canberra became a home away from home for the Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers and their fans in particular, while also hosting three finals series matches."
Dobson singled out Manuka curator Brad van Dam for special mention after preparing pitches at short notice.
A 'Thank You, Canberra' message was placed on the field during the Scorchers match against the Brisbane Heat and beamed into lounge rooms around Australia.
Dobson said he was keen to have more cricket in Canberra next season, despite the lack of an existing content deal.
"On multiple occasions, Team Canberra also stepped up at short notice to make Manuka Oval and their support staff available to the League to ensure we could deliver a full season without interruption.
"We'd also like to recognise the people of Canberra, who have shown their love of the Big Bash on all 12 occasions at which we welcomed crowds into Manuka.
In all, over 50,000 fans have come through the gates to enjoy high quality cricket in a COVID-safe environment and we look forward to bringing them more cricket next year."
