Not many people might know that when, in 1970, Grozden Bralovich, 75, first came to Canberra, there were just 12 pigeons in Garema Place.
With his regular feeds at 3 o'clock every afternoon, the number of pigeons had grown to about 350, The Canberra Times reported on this day in 1975.
Mr Bralovich lived through a German prisoner-of-war camp and decided that pigeons are one of the few beings on earth that are not selfish and always fighting, and so, he decided to help them by giving them food every day.
"Pigeons don't fight for the food I give them, just take what they can and leave the rest for the others", Mr Bralovich told The Canberra Times.
"I just wave my hand and they come down.
"They know me very well and even eat out of my hand," he said.
He didn't feed them on weekends because he knew they'd be fed by others visiting Garema Place. But rain or shine, he would be seen feeding the pigeons each afternoon on Mondays to Fridays.
