The passage of a high pressure system over the ACT will plunge Thursday morning's temperature to minus 4 degrees C ahead of a cloudless day with a high of 11 degrees C.

From Friday, a series of low pressure troughs arriving later in the day will sweep up from the south behind a system approaching from the west, bringing cold weather and rain showers on and off all through the weekend.

Parents taking their children to weekend junior sport should rug up be prepared for some discomfort with a cloudy, windy day on Saturday, a 90 per cent chance of showers and a maximum of 10 degrees.

It's great news for skiers and snowboarders after the previous weekend's 30cm dump, although winds will gradually increase in the mountains from Thursday and snow showers arrive, making conditions far less comfortable. On Sunday, Perisher's maximum temperature will be just -2 deg C.

In Canberra, the mercury will struggle up to a maximum of just 7 deg C on Sunday. With winds of between 25 to 40km/h expected, the apparent temperature will be much lower.

This weekend is likely to be a good one for the capital's snowchasers although the ACT government has warned that popular locations such as Brindabella Road (Namadgi National Park boundary to NSW border), Corin Road (Woods Reserve to Corin Dam), Boboyan Road (Glendale Crossing to the NSW border) and the Mt Franklin Road (Bulls Head to Mt Ginini) can close to traffic if road conditions become unsafe.
