Three Canberra students gained maximum passes in the 1963 Leaving Certificate Examination, it was revealed on this day 58 years ago.

It meant John McMullen of Canberra High School; Robert Moss of the Canberra Boys' Grammar; and Margaret Youngman of Canberra Girls' Grammar all received full marks in their final year 12 exam.
Two of them gained first class honours in English - an unusual occurrence.
John McMullen, the son of Professor Allister McMullen, professor of mathematics at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, gained two first class honours and four A passes.
The passes were in English A, French A; mathematics, first class honours; mathematics II, A; physics, first class honours; and chemistry A. He hoped to do a science degree in the school of general studies at the Australian National University. In 1963, he won the University of New South Wales school mathematics competition and was dux of Canberra High School in his third, fourth and fifth years. Robert Moss gained three first class honours and two A passes. They were: English, first class honours; French, A; ancient history, first class honours; modern history, first class honours; and geography A. Margaret Youngman obtained two first class honours and four A passes. They were: English, first class honours; French, A; mathematics 1, A; mathematics 2, A; chemistry, first class honours; and music (theory and practice), A.
Margaret was dux of the school and obtained two second class honours and four A passes when she sat for the Leaving Certificate last year. She was vice-captain of the school, helped publish the school's magazine, and played hockey and tennis. Margaret said she had appreciated the extra year at school and now would do an arts course at ANU. Later she wanted to sit for a diploma in education and take up teaching.
