The Fyshwick stretch of Canberra Avenue is the worst hotspot for car crashes in the ACT with 53 smashes in the past year, according to the most recent AAMI Crash Index.

Gundaroo Drive in Gungahlin wasn't too far behind with 49 car accidents, followed by 39 crashes on Parkes Way and 36 accidents on the Federal and Monaro highways, according to the claims data released on Wednesday.
The southside road knocked Northbourne Avenue from last year's top spot.
Canberra's continuous road works appear to have influenced the latest list.
AAMI spokesman Reuben Aitchison said changed traffic conditions often caught people by surprise or sparked road rage, with the top five dangerous roads heavily congested during peak driving times.
"People tend to react in one of two ways; they either zone out and start thinking about what's going to happen at work that day and they're not focusing on what's happening around them and that leads them to miss those important visual cues they need to avoid an accident," he said.
"Or they get really impatient, driving right up the back of another driver and that robs them of the ability to avoid a collision, and also increases the chance of them getting hit from behind because they're more likely to have to slam on the brakes.
"That section of Canberra Avenue in Fyshwick, there's been some extra roadworks in the past year there which would explain why that's a hot spot."
Drivers also grew complacent during the weekly commute.
"People often drive on their regular commuting route on auto pilot. Anything like construction work or roadworks or changes to traffic patterns can upset things and catch them by surprise," Mr Aitchison said.
He said the territory's claims data often varied from crash patterns elsewhere across Australia due to the city's increasing number of intersections, including roundabouts, and the territory's wildlife numbers.
"Gundaroo Drive and the Federal Highway are heavily populated with wildlife and that can contribute fairly significantly to accidents," he said.
The remaining roads filling out Canberra's top 15 crash sites ranged from 21 to 28 accidents recorded.
Mr Aitchison expected to see improved accident numbers at a number of the roads listed on the index over the next 12 months as completed upgrades took effect.
"There has been some improvements over the past year, we're likely to see the effects of those improvements this year, especially around that section of Canberra Avenue," he said.
"There was a problem intersection at Geelong Street and Canberra Avenue where they've now got new traffic lights installed - we're hoping that will see a reduction in accidents over the next year."
The index also revealed the top 10 contributing factors to accidents on Australian roads.
These were other drivers (40 per cent), distraction or loss of concentration (29 per cent), carelessness (24 per cent), traffic congestion (12 per cent), bad weather (12 per cent), impatience (11 per cent), bad roads and infrastructure (11 per cent), speeding (8 per cent), fatigue (7 per cent) and alcohol.
Despite other drivers being blamed for close to half of car accidents Mr Aitchison said the insurer had witnessed a shift in behaviour.
"We're seeing this shift away from blaming other drivers towards admitting the accident they were involved in was definitely avoidable," he said.
"We do a lot of work along with other road safety bodies, police and others to highlight some of the common behaviours that lead to accidents. Hopefully that is making people more aware of the way they drive and the fact most of these accidents, two thirds to three quarters, could be avoided if we just focused on our driving a bit more."
