Canberra Girls Grammar has ended a five-month search for a new principal with the appointment of Anna Owen, currently the deputy principal of a private girls school in Brisbane.

Mrs Owen appointment was announced on Monday after a “national and international search”; she takes up the role at the start of the 2019 academic year.
Mrs Owen is not giving interviews until she starts the job, but said in a statement, “I am honoured to be appointed the 15th principal of Canberra Girls Grammar School. I am a strong believer in girls’ education and look forward to leading a century-old community that is actively working to create a world where anything is possible for young women.”
She has been deputy head of Brisbane Girls Grammar for five years, and was its acting principal during term two this year. She has held senior positions at different schools, including Moreton Bay College and Ipswich Girls’ Grammar.
Mrs Owen is a keen sportswoman and has also started a masters of business administration at the University of Queensland.
Like her predecessor, Anne Coutts, Mrs Owen has a background in science.
Canberra Girls Grammar has recently been increasing its emphasis on science, technology, engineering and maths and ran a workshop in September this year celebrating the achievements of women in the field. It also opened a new science wing in 2012.
The head of the senior school, Peter Milligan, has been acting as interim principal since Mrs Coutts left the role earlier this year. Mrs Coutts had been in the post for more than seven-and-a-half years before leaving after her husband was appointed Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Bunbury, Western Australia.
Mrs Owen and her family will make the move from Brisbane to Canberra next month, once the academic year is over. Her daughter will enrol in Canberra Girls Grammar senior school.
