Starting with a warning tale for any property investors out there...

The rule is pretty clear. If you own a property and it's not your principal place of residence, then you need to pay land tax on it in most cases.

Many property owners, in some way or another, fail to pay regardless. The ACT government is trying to recoup that missing revenue, and last year hauled in $13 million in unpaid land tax.

Some are disputing the revenue office's findings they owe missing payments. But the chief minister has a clear message for those who don't pay.

Ray and Pam Palmer lost a son in Afghanistan more than eight years ago. Lance Corporal Gary Wilson says they gained many more in a modern wartime tragedy that brought families together.

Lance Corporal Wilson was on board a Black Hawk helicopter when it crashed near Kandahar, Afghanistan, in June 2010, killing four military personnel - including 27-year-old private Scott Travis Palmer.

Three months later, Lance Corporal Wilson was in hospital recovering from serious injuries suffered in the crash when he was visited by Private Palmer's parents, Ray and Pam. United by the tragic loss of a son and fellow soldier, the trio struck up a bond that has strengthened over the years.
