Liberals dig in to their last man and taxpayers' last dollar

Australians admire fighters with grit and determination – even, or perhaps especially, when it seems obvious that the struggle will be unavailing. Many government parliamentarians have already given May's election away. But Prime Minister Scott Morrison's energy and ardour seem unabated, and it seems clear he will carry on to the end, with the last fibre of his being. That may make little difference to the outcome but at least, as at Gallipoli, he will hobble away with some dignity and self-respect.
