The jury took about a day to deliver its unanimous verdicts. It found the former priest John Phillip Aitchison, 67, guilty of a total five counts of rape and eight acts of indecency against the same teenage girl.

The jury acquitted Aitchison of the remaining two counts on the indictment, being one act of indecency, and one of rape.

Aitchison sat in the defendant's box with his legs crossed, hands clasped and eyes closed as the jury foreman delivered the jury verdicts one by one. Aitchison's sole supporter in the public gallery quietly cried.

Following the verdicts, Justice Michael Elkaim granted a prosecution request to revoke Aitchison's bail, and the man was led from court in the custody of corrections officers.

Prosecutors tendered his criminal history.

The ACT Supreme Court trial heard graphic testimony from the woman who Aitchison abused repeatedly during the 1980s, when she was about 13 or 14.

In one harrowing account, the woman said she was practicing her music in a Canberra church when she was ushered over by Aitchison.

She said Aitchison told her if she prayed, God might let her see her dead dog, and then he raped her. He also raped her in a hall and committed an act of indecency on her in a pool.

In his defence, Aitchison had argued he was homosexual. The trial heard from two men who said Aitchison abused them as boys, and their evidence was not challenged.

But prosecutors said the evidence of the two boys showed Aitchison had a tendency to be attracted to young children he met through church or music and to act on it.

Justice Elkaim thanked the jury for their service and said they were free to go.

The case returns to court August 13 for sentence.
