Canberra Times Letters to the Editor: beware changes to force for police

Recent events stress the difference between the military and the police in our liberal society: the military exercise maximum force and respond to superior orders; the police, as independent statutory office holders, are a minimum-force civil alternative, and each officer in discharging his or her duties is individually responsible before the courts for the actions taken in enforcing the law in our name.
