Just hours prior to the early morning robbery she was dining at an exclusive dinner hosted by designer Azzedine Alaia with her sister Kourtney before she retired for the night, alone, to a luxury apartment, the Hotel de Pourtales, in the Eighth Arrondissement.

Laurent Riquart, a spokesman for the Paris police, said two men dressed as police broke into Kardashian West's room, where they gagged and tied her up before escaping with at least three accomplices.

A spokesperson for the police officers' union said the attack was targeted after the receptionist - who was also bound - was forced to direct the group to Kardashian West's room. Kardashian West was then locked in a bathroom after being tied up with tape.

A spokeswoman for Kardashian West said she was "badly shaken but physically unharmed" following the incident. She left France the next day after making a statement to local police, returning to New York on a private jet with her mother and manager Kris Jenner.

The prosecutor's office confirmed a ring worth an estimated $5.8 million and a jewellery box containing about $7.2 million worth of accessories were stolen. It has yet to be determined if the gems belonged to Kardashian West or were loaned to her for official Paris Fashion Week engagements - where she was a front row guest at the Givenchy, Balmain and Off White shows. These outings were documented to her 161 million followers on social media and captured by the camera crew of her reality series who accompanied her and her family to Paris.

Two of her mobile phones were also stolen as well as credit cards. It is not known if her engagement ring - a 15 carat square-shaped solitaire diamond set on a thin pave band, worth more than $1.25 million - was taken in the heist.

The high-profile robbery is another blow for France's tourism industry, which is still reeling from two major terrorist attacks. Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo condemned the attack of Kardashian West.

"She has my support and will always be welcome here in Paris. I have full confidence that the police force, as part of their investigation, will quickly identify and apprehend the perpetrators of these acts," she said.

"This is a very rare occurrence that took place in a private space, and in no way does it call into question the work of our police or the security of our public spaces."

Her longtime personal bodyguard, Pascal Duvier, was reportedly not with her at the time of the robbery, according to CNN.

Her time in Paris was earlier marred by self-described "entertainment Hollywood reporter" Vitalii Sediuk who launched at her in an attempt to kiss her infamous behind. Duvier intercepted Sediuk and knocked him to the ground. Kardashian West later pressed charges.

But two days after this latest crime and crucial details remain unclear - like why she was in possession of jewellery worth millions without a guard - however fans can expect to see the drama unfold in future episodes of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, now in its 12th season.

The reality series is her preferred publicity organ, and she has previously used major life events including her European wedding to Kanye West, her split from former husband of 72-days Kris Humphries and subsequent fertility struggles as narrative arcs of the show.

So far Kardashian West and her family - all avid users of social media - have remained tight-lipped about the attack.
