Acting Justice David Robinson on Wednesday sentenced George Ghoubriel, 64, to two years and five months jail.

The judge backdated the sentence to August, and set a non-parole period of 18 months.

Ghoubriel will be eligible for parole in February 2017.

Acting Justice Robinson also ordered he repay a total of $94,200, although he acknowledged the money was likely unrecoverable.

Ghoubriel had originally pleaded not guilty to seven charges of obtaining property by deception and three counts of passing valueless cheques.

He was committed to stand trial, but entered pleas of guilty to three counts of fraud on the morning of the hearing.

Court documents said the offender – who has convictions for fraud, theft, and passing valueless cheques dating back to 2001 – approached one of his victims after overhearing her trying to stave off foreclosure proceedings on her mortgage in January 2013.

He offered to loan her money provided she give him $1200 up front and then she would repay him in weekly instalments.

But he instead kept and spent the woman's money.

Ghoubriel was friends with the second victim and the pair entered a business agreement to buy wine and sell it to restaurants at a profit.

The 55-year-old single mother lived in a two bedroom flat with her five children and had been keen to improve her financial situation.

She transferred him $20,000 in June 2012, but he spent the money instead of pursuing the business.

The following month, he offered to provide her finance so she could buy a house.

She transferred him $73,000 she had redrawn from her mortgage, which he then used to spend over six weeks.

The court heard Ghoubriel claimed to suffer from a number of health conditions, including heart disease, depression, diabetes, and hypothyroidism.

He received a disability support pension from the government.

During a sentence hearing on Wednesday morning, prosecutor Trent Hickey cautioned the court from believing Ghoubriel, arguing he had made false representations to a pre-sentence report author.

"He is a conman. He has swindled these two ladies out of their money," Mr Hickey said.

"His Honour could not have confidence in anything he's said unless it's verified."

Mr Hickey said one of the victims was a single mother-of-five children who had redrawn on her mortgage in order to give the money to Ghoubriel.

The court heard he had made no effort to repay the money, had previous convictions for dishonesty, and lacked remorse.

The prosecutor argued Ghoubriel's prospects of rehabilitation were meagre and pushed for full-time jail sentence.

Mr Hickey said anything less than jail time would be inadequate and not reflect the object seriousness of the offences.

"If he has a cheque book, then his prospects are poor. His lack of remorse and insight is concerning.

"The only inference is that the offender committed the crimes for greed.

"The community needs to be protected from him."

But defence barrister Glenn Theakston said supervision conditions attached to a sentence could help protect the community.

He was evaluated as unsuitable for weekend detention.

Mr Theakston conceded his client's criminal history included convictions for dishonesty, but he said the offences had been limited and spaced over a long period of time.

He said this showed Ghoubriel did not habitually conduct himself as a conman.
