Accused murderer Christopher David Navin allegedly inflicted 73 stab wounds on Nicholas Sofer-Schreiber over a period of "tens-of-minutes", a court has heard.

An examination of Mr Sofer-Schreiber's pleural cavity – a thin space next to each lung – during an autopsy revealed about 750 millilitres of blood.
The forensic pathologist who conducted the autopsy told an ACT Supreme Court murder trial on Tuesday that the cavity could only fill with blood while Mr Sofer-Schreiber had a pulse.
Dr Michael Burke said the amount of blood in the cavity meant he estimated that Mr Sofer-Schreiber had been alive for more than 10 minutes after he suffered a stab wound to his back.
"You need the blood to be pumping," Dr Burke said.
"This is not the type of injury that kills you quickly … 10, 20 minutes, maybe longer."
Mr Sofer-Schreiber died after two carotid arteries were severed by three stab wounds to his neck.
"It is the lethal injury," Dr Burke said.
"It would probably, I would've thought, take less than 30 seconds [to die]."
Mr Sofer-Schreiber died on the floor of his Lyneham home on the evening of Boxing Day 2013.
His friends discovered him two days later.
Navin, 29, is accused of his murder, but has pleaded not guilty due to mental impairment.
It is common ground between the Crown and defence that Navin caused Mr Sofer-Schreiber's death.
The court has previously heard the men had forged a friendship over a common interest in punk rock music and had flatted together at the Hall Street unit in 2013.
Navin moved out mid-year and paid for damage to the garage wall after a dispute with Mr Sofer-Schreiber.
It is alleged an angry Navin murdered Mr Sofer-Schreiber as revenge as he believed Mr Sofer-Schreiber had excluded him from their friendship group.
The court has previously heard evidence Navin appeared to "laugh off" the situation.
The court continued to hear autopsy evidence on day seven of the trial on Tuesday morning.
Autopsy evidence showed Mr Sofer-Schreiber suffered 73 separate stab wounds, including 51 to his back and 12 to his left flank.
Dr Burke said Mr Sofer-Schreiber had been stabbed in the back first and died about 10 to 20 minutes later from blood loss caused by stab wounds to his neck.
He could estimate the time between the initial wound and death because of the amount of blood found in Mr Sofer-Schreiber's pleural cavity.
He said at least two knives had been used.
Mr Sofer-Schreiber also suffered a defence wound to his left hand, which could be consistent with trying to grab the knife, the court heard.
The court also heard from a crime scene investigator who matched a bloodied shoe print from the kitchen with Navin's right boot, which had been seized by police when they questioned him at a Grafton property in January 2014.
The trial before Justice John Burns continues on Wednesday.
