The capital recorded 10.4 milimetres of rain as of 9pm with wind gusts reaching 39 kilometres an hour.
Homes in Dunlop, Hawker, Latham, Macgregor, Page, Scullin and Weetangera lost power from 7.20pm.
ActewAGL expected electricity to be restored by 9.30pm.
Some Canberrans also reported television channels down, with many taking to Twitter to vent their concerns about missing reality television show My Kitchen Rules.

In the city, movie-goers reported the premature ending of three Dendy film sessions due to a power surge about 6.55pm.
One film came back on but ticket-holders to the other two sessions were offered a refund. Other films screened throughout the evening.
Despite the storm there was no severe weather warning issued for the ACT on Monday.
Down the road the Queanbeyan SES was called to four jobs as of 10.30pm, including a tree that exploded after it was struck by lightning.
