In response to the party's campaign to stop parents from buying toys that gender stereotype their children, the Liberal Senator says that if boys get Barbie dolls and girls get monster trucks on December 25, the scene will be set for unhappy children "across the country".
On Tuesday, Greens spokeswoman for women, Larissa Waters, called on gift-giving adults to think about how toys are marketed to children over the festive season.
While Senator Waters said the "starkly separate aisles of pink and blue" might seem harmless, but "setting such strong gender stereotypes at early ages can have long-term impacts, including [on] self-perception and career aspirations."
Senator Waters said that "outdated stereotypes" about girls and boys perpetuate gender inequality, "which feeds into very serious problems such as domestic violence and the gender pay gap".
But the controversial Senator Bernardi, who is well-known for his hardline socially conservative views, said that the Greens Senator was "clearly stuck in an outdated 1970s gender war".
"Frankly, I think she's consumed too much Christmas eggnog to come up with an idea like this."
Senator Bernardi said children "should be allowed to be children".
"To say you're giving a boy a truck or a hammer is somehow leading to domestic violence and gender pay gaps is simply bizarre," he said.
"I hope that Santa brings Senator Waters some common sense for Christmas."
Prime Minister Tony Abbott also dismissed the campaign, saying that he did not believe "in that kind of political correctness".
"You wonder why the Parliament's difficult, when you've got people like that with the balance of power in the Senate," he told the Today Show.
The "No Gender December" campaign was founded by Thea Hughes and Julie Huberman, who hope it will prompt toy companies to become more inclusive in their marketing.
Stores like Ikea are a good example of gender neutral marketing of toys and kids furniture, according to the group, with products in a wide range of bright colours.
But others, like Toys R Us specifically target girls and boys. Girls toys are listed as dolls, prams and princesses. Under boys, there are action figures, planes and trucks.
The group hope that children's imagination should not be limited by the colour codes, labels and imagery used by many retailers to sell toys.
"It's 2014, women mow lawns and men push prams," Ms Huberman said.
"But while we've moved on, many toy companies haven't."
No Gender December is asking people to take an online pledge that "there is no place for gender stereotypes under my Christmas tree" and to participate in stereotype-free play dates.
