The single-vehicle crash occurred at about 9.35pm on Sturt Avenue and police and ambulance crews attended the scene.
The motorcyclist was taken to Canberra Hospital with critical head injuries for treatment and police had closed the road in both directions at 9.45pm. One south-bound lane was reopened about midnight and all lanes had reopened by 1.30am.
Pieces of the man's motorbike, as well as fragments of his helmet, were strewn over a 60-metre section of the road.
The man had landed on a grass median strip after he was thrown from the bike.
Police said wet weather would have contributed to the distance the Yamaha motorcycle travelled after the initial impact.
They said it was too early to tell whether speed was a factor.
A spokesperson for ACT Policing said the crash was currently being investigated by the police's Collision Investigation and Reconstruction Team.
