Bureau senior forecaster Neale Fraser said the mountains and alpine resorts had already seen about half a metre of snow this week. He expected another half a metre to fall over the weekend.
"At this stage, we should see snow at 1200 metres for Saturday and the snow level might get down to areas at 900 metres on Sunday," Mr Fraser said, adding this would mean parts of the ACT would be dusted in white.
And in good news for alpine resorts who have had a slow start to the season with a snow-free May, it does not look like it is going anywhere.
"The snow should persist, pretty well by the looks of it, through the winter," Mr Fraser said. After the snowfalls this week, Corin Forest Resort decided to reopen its snow-play area after an extended closure. Other resorts opened new trails.
NSW and the ACT have had a wet and wild week, with trees smashing through roofs and power lines down. While temperatures have risen slightly since Tuesday's minus 6 degrees in Canberra, gales are still swirling the territory.
"The only downside is the strong gale-force winds averaging 50-60km/h over Sunday and Monday," Mr Fraser said.
The weekend's expected north-westerly to westerly winds are the result of another major cold front which is likely to gather speed on Friday night, according to the bureau. Canberra should see a minimum of 6 degrees and a maximum of 12 degrees on Thursday, followed by a minimum of 4 degrees and a maximum of 13 degrees on Friday. Expected showers and lows of 2 degrees should keep Canberrans indoors and rugged up over the weekend.
